While Athenians revered politics and public services, and found participating in either an honor, the Spartans were the exact opposite. Spartans would say that the only worthy public service is serving your country is in the military. Spartans left the majority of running the government to ephors. Men to old or to maimed to be of any help in the military, men that had a son killed were also included in this group (if they couldn't lie their way out of it). This difference can all be seen in one defining fact; Spartans not only let their helots participate in the government but gave them a level of power that the Athenians usually left for only some of the more respected citizens of Athens. Also should be mentioned the word laconic directly applies to the spartan way of public speaking, something they detested.
the first and only form of true democracy.
Peaceful Athens exist today because the type of government is democracy and Sparta is oligarchy and democracy went on but not oligarchy. We still have the type of government democracy today.
Their feet, except that their cavalry used horses and their supply was carried by donkeys.
Sparta: better military, more rights for woman, oligarchy government, land locked Athens: better navy, less rights for woman, good democratic government, near a good source of water Please note that even though Athens had a smaller army, they could still win. Remember the battle of the Marathon? They were greatly outnumbered, but still claimed victory. For more information, click the Explore link in the Sparta link in the Related link.
Sparta's government was different than other Greek governments. They had two kings ruled the city, but a 28-member council of elders limited the powers of the kings. These men were recruited from the aristocratic Spartiates.

The most famous city states in ancient Greece were Athens and Sparta. Dont think of Greece as a single country, they never were, more like every city having its own rules laws and independance from all others occasionally some would be able to influence others with military alliances and such but all were very independent.
It was a war between city-states. Athens against Sparta. It weakened Greek civilization.

Personally, I think that democracy expanded in Athens and not Sparta, because Athens had a different kind of government from the start and democracy worked for them. Sparta was more military based and were always prepared to fight war. This is just the type of system they had. Oddly, their city-state vanished without trace after the Peloponnesian war. Doesn't that say something good about democracies? Athens had a better system. Overall, both city-states saw their way fit and the other one was wrong. Why would you try your enemies kind of government instead of sticking with your own? This must be what the Spartans thought.
Sparta had direct democracy
Sparta was an oligarchy, [ a type of government which only a few people hold power] unlike there enemy the Athens, the people of Sparta [ the Spartans ] focused on military skills and trained at a very young age and retired at 60 very old huh?well that's not all you know what amazes me the most? at once in a war between Athens and Persia, the Athens aggred to come together and defeat the Persians they defeated the Persians but that didn't make them friends it just made them enemies.......... again then came the great war the Peloponnesian war when Sparta and the Athens fought and Sparta had won ,these is all i know of Sparta, sorry for the long answer.Simply put: LACONIC! Suprise, suprise ^^laconic - brief and to the point; effectively cut short; "a crisp retort"; "a response so curt as to be almost rude"; "the laconic reply; `yes'"; "short and terse and easy to understand"From the ancient Greek name of Sparta: 'lakadaimon'
The ruling trait is the Dominant trait.
