Pretty sure it was the Crimean War 1853 - 1856. I have read opinions that it could be the US - Mexican War, but the wet plate process was not invented until around 1850, and that war was over in 1848. The invention of the daguerrotype process preceded the US - Mexican war, but it would not be suitable because exposures would take far too long. The wet plate process was bad enough for creating photographs in the field. If there were photographs of the US-M war, they were likely as posed and contrived as those of the Crimean War. The American Civil War was not the first as some think, but Mathew Brady was a pioneer in the sense that he presented a more realistic view during the American Civil War compared to the glorification approach by those who preceded him.
