Its original purpose was as a memorial, written in two languages so that everyone could read it. (The part in the Egyptian language, which we might think of as Old Coptic, was written in two different alphabets, so there were three copies altogether of the text) However, its use after its rediscovery in the early nineteenth century was as a key to understanding the hieroglyphic alphabet. Because names were written both in greek letters and in hieroglyphic letters, it enabled Champollion to realize that the hieroglyphs were phonetic, and thus started him on the road to deciphering the alphabet.
