The Spartans were first and foremost a Greek civilization. Therefore they upheld many of the religious norms of Ancient Greece. They held to the pantheon which was headed by Zeus but they had their own "patron god" as well. The main body of gods was referred to as the Alkides Theoi (Αλκίδες Θεοί).

Technically the Kingship of Sparta was referred to with the term Heracleidon (Ηρακλειδών), or Herculean, blood lines. It is believed that the first King of Sparta was Heracles, Hercules so it was his bloodline which fueled the leaders of their city-state.
