American civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. grew up as the son of a pastor. His family background laid the foundation of his strong will to fight. Dr. King became actively involved in the Civil Rights Movement after he led a protest following the arrest of Rosa Parks in 1955. As he worked for equal rights for all across the country he became known as one of the icons in the fight leading to his famous I Have a Dream speech in Washington D.C.

The mission statement of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) focused on achieving civil rights through nonviolent means. By supporting the March on Washington in 1963, SNCC aligned with the goals of peaceful protest and social change advocated by the Civil Rights Movement, demonstrating solidarity for advancing racial equality in America.
