In May of 1876, South Carolina Democrats drafted The Plan of the Campaign of 1876. For these white Carolinians , this was their way to "redeem" their state. The strategies basically involved preventing Blacks from voting. To do this violence was encouraged against Blacks and any other "Republicans".
By 1876, the three states that remained unredeemed from Reconstruction were South Carolina, Louisiana, and Florida. These states were still under Republican control and had not been fully reintegrated into the Union, as they faced ongoing political strife and resistance from white Southern Democrats. The term "redeemed" refers to the process by which these states were returned to Democratic control, which occurred in the years following 1876.
