The style of number plates changed in September 2001. The format since then has been two letters, known as 'local memory tags', two numbers to indicate the year of registration (first or second half) known as 'age identifiers', followed by three more letters known as the 'random element'. From March 2010, the age identifier will be 10, changing to 60 in September 2010. In March 2011, the age identifier will be 11, changing six months later to 61. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) says this pattern will continue until all permutations are exhausted. Local memory tags show in which part of the country a vehicle was first registered. For example, London registrations start with the letter L, while West of England registrations, which include Exeter, Truro and Bristol local offices, start with a W. Since the new format was introduced it has been illegal for new or replacement plates to use anything other than the approved typeface which is easily read by speed cameras. The letters I and Q are not used in the new format and the letter Z is used only in the random element.

How do you change number plates on a car?

UK - Specific - Go into Halfords, buy the plates and ask the nice man on the service desk to do it fo you.......easy peasy, and no broken nails :-) That will only be legal if you are replacing registration number plates with plates bearing the same registration. If you are asking the question, "How can I change my registration plates for plates with a different registration you would have to do this via specialist firms on the internet, but DVLA must be involved, and there are fees to pay.

Do rear number plates have to be yellow?

Acrylic number plates sigify the registration mark of a vehicle. Currently the UK regulations insist on a yellow rear plate unless the vehicle is a classic car and can display black and silver plates. They can be made of different materials, but more commonly seen are metals and acrylics. http://www.image-reg.com/acrylic-number-plates.html

Why are car number plates white at the front and yellow at the back in the uk.?

Reflective number plates were introduced to the UK in the late 60's early 70's The reasoning behind the white/yellow colouring is so that you could tell which way a vehicle was facing, in poorly lit areas. White, it was coming towards you, yellow it was facing away from you.

Depends on where you are. In the UK, Yellow license plates are used on the rear of a car and white ones on the front. They are both retroreflective to aid visibility and conform to standards that allow ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) by the police.
