It's not good. You have to partially drop the steering to have the pan clear and take it totally out, especially if your oil pump is still installed because the stem with the screen goes way to the bottom of the pan. I've had my pan down several times, but I could manage to maneuver it enough to get in and clean the bottom of the pan, or remove the oil pump.

This is a trick question. The correct question would be how do you remove a Jeep Cherokee from the oil pan. (Seriously) If you are dealing with the most common engine type (s-6 4.0l at least in older models), first note that in order to create enough clearance to eventually remove the pan, the chassis of the vehicle, not the axle, must be elevated. The pan will never come out unless the front axle is as far away from the pan as mechanically possible.

  1. Disconnect the neg battery terminal.
  2. Drain oil from the pan.
  3. Remove the steering arm damper. (This might require a two-jaw puller.)
  4. Remove the starter motor. (Two bolts, one on top of the motor one on the bottom.)
  5. Remove the bell housing cover. (Four bolts)
  6. Remove the pan bolts.
  7. Remove the pan from the motor, this may require some persuasion with a rubber mallet.
  8. Extract the pan by dropping it down onto the front axle. Turn it slightly sideways and slide/pull it out towards the passenger side of the vehicle. (Easier said than done)
