Most likely pottery started in Japan where they would take clay and make bowls and plates out of it and decorate them in blue and white and then sell them. Either that or it was a Native American tradition to make pottery to put things in and to eat off of.

'Ceramics' is not an object or item, it is a word used to describe objects or items made from clay which is dug from the ground, shaped then dried and heated to a high temperature. This 'firing', as it is called, causes changes to the structure of the clay so that water will no longer soften it. Ceramic items range from rough builders bricks to very delicate fine porcelain pots, figures, etc.

The word 'Pottery' is often used to mean the same thing.
