To leave something about their culture for other generations to see. Prehistoric art may have been created for religious purposes or as a way of promoting good things (eg: lots of images of fertility). They also may have used art to practice shamanism and to teach how to hunt. Prehistoric art served the same purpose art in modern times serves. It records events, people, way of life, the beauty of nature, and just plain whimsy.
Mostly Stone Age and Prehistoric Art is the oldest known example. The only catch is that today it is unknown how many art figures have been made. Even geologists haven't found any piece of art from Prehistoric and Stone Age times, but it's common sense that art started in those time periods. Scientists haven't found any actual piece of art from back then.

No such thing as Prehistoric art. They communicated by drawing on rocks. They built things as altars. But since we know about it, it's not prehistoric, it's historic.
