Vincenzo Peruggia's motive for stealing The Mona Lisa from the Louvre was to return the painting to Italy because he hoped the Italian government would give him a reward. Peruggia wanted to return the painting to its native land because he believed that all the Italian art in the Louvre had been stolen by Napoleon -- including the Mona Lisa. Peruggia selected the Mona Lisa because she was small and easy to carry. Unfortunately for Peruggia, the Mona Lisa had not been stolen by Napoleon at all. It came to France with Leonardo da vinci when he went there to work at the court of King Francis I. King Francis either purchased the Mona Lisa from da Vinci or from one of his heirs.
His name is Vincenzo Peruggia.
The story he told the police when he was caught was that he stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre (Paris) because he felt that the painting belonged to Italy since Leonardo da Vinci was Italian. He claimed patriotism as his reason.
But perhaps he only said that because he was caught and had to come up with a reason...
The Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911 by Vincenzo Perugia for 2 years. He was caught trying to sell it to Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
