Over time, oil paints change chemically, so large areas will peel if painted over with fresh oil paint. A base should be used but that would not be conservation but repainting. Hard call.

How do you reuse an artist canvas?

There are several ways to reuse a canvas: (1) You may flip it over and paint on the back. (2) If the original painting is waterbased (acrylic, for example) you can paint directly over it with either acrylic or oil paint. But if the original painting was done using oils, you can only paint directly over it with oils. (3) If you prefer a white ground to start with, you can use a primer called "gesso" and apply it in one or more layers for a fresh start.

What is a wash in art?

A wet wash is where you take a paintbrush and you dip it in water without paint and go over the paper or canvas or whatever you're painting just to wet the medium on which you are painting on.

Do you need to use a sealer before exterior painting?

I believe that you prime than paint than seal. It depends on the paint you are using and what you are painting A lot of the exterior paints used today don't require any undercoat. However if you are painting over a previously painted surface you must keep preparation in mind.

What suffixes can you add to the word paint?

If it is just one kind of paint then its like the word water, no plural just a measurement or unit (5 gallons of water, 3 buckets of paint). If it is different KINDS of paint (different colors or types of paints like latex as opposed to oil) the plural is paints ("I brought my paints with me for art class")

How do you oil out an oil painting on canvas?

, When you start an oil painting, the paint isn't shiny at first. The canvas ground sucks in some of the oil, and lean oil paint isn't very shiny anyway. Most painters don't like this matte and raw appearance. Colors are different when they are matte (lighter). Some painters then rub extra linseed oil into the dry paint, before they start to paint again over the first one or two layers. But I think it's better to use a non-fat varnish for that (like dammar varnish) In oil painting, it's important to paint fat-over-lean. Each succeeding layer should be a little bit fatter than the layer before that. This is what makes your painting durable. And - oiling in a painting may disrupt this rule. When you put lean paint over fatter paint, it may start to chip off within a few years.

Is it recommended to apply oil paints directly to raw canvas?

You can, but it isn't always a good choice. Oil paintings are usually textural, most artists who work in oils build up layers and brush strokes are an integral part of the finished piece. Depending on the amount of texture and the ground (canvas-paper, canvas-board, stretched canvas, or some solid surface, like hardboard) you can sand the painting slightly -if the ground is rigid, then add a coat or two of gesso. In the case of flexible grounds just use gesso, to smooth out the surface and allow to dry. Once the gesso is dry you can paint a new painting over the old one with no worries at all.
