Undoubtedly the earliest tattoos were practiced by the various Native American tribes across the country. In this instance, the inks were made from various dyes and plants ground down to an opaque and black solution, and they were usually "punched in" by hand. This is when tattoos are done by hand in a method usually referred to as "hand poking" where you do a tattoo by dipping a needle cluster in ink or sometimes a singular needle and continuously poke the skin till you build up the line or the area of fill. This is a method that is still practiced heavily today from homeless kids to professional tattoo artists alike.
