is more steeply sloped than the windward side
The side of a sand dune facing the ocean is called leeward.
role in formation of sand dunes (in sand dune: Formation and growth of dunes)...sand brought up the windward slope. When this depositional slope is steepened to the angle of repose of dry sand (about 32°), this angle is maintained and the added sand slips down the slope or slip face. When this happens, the dune form is in equilibrium, and the dune moves forward as a whole, sand being eroded from the windward side and deposited on the lee.
The upwind direction of a sand dune has a gentle slope. A steep slope is on the downwind side. The pronounced slope of a sand dune is called a slip face. Sand erodes from the wind off the slip face. To learn more about sand dunes, visit http://www.tulane.edu/~sanelson/geol111/deserts.htm.
The leeward or downwind side is known as the slipface.slipface
The windward side. Windward, the direction from which the wind is blowing; facing the wind. as opposed t leeward which is aka wind shadow, where air is not able to move material and allows it to accumulate and build up, think sand dune.
The side downwind of the prevailing wind direction.

Is more steeply sloped than the windward side.
The side of a sand dune facing the ocean is called leeward.
The wind deposits large loose amounts of sand to create sand dunes. The wind pushes sand up one side. That sand will move over the edge of the dune's top. The sand will pile up up until gravity pulls it down and this creates a steeper slope than the one that faces the wind.

windward side
In general, most dunes have a windward side and a leeward side. The windward side is the side on which wind strikes the dune, leeward is the opposite side. The force of the wind will affect the sand on the windward side differently from the leeward side.
