Wylog Fong was born Wy Lok Fong in San Francisco in 1897, the oldest of 2 sons of Jong Fong. The family moved to Portland Oregon in the early part of the 20th Century. Fong attended Franklin High School there where his considerable talent became apparent. In the late 1910s, he attended the Portland Art Museum's Art School. His was equally adept at both oil and watercolor painting, though his oils are rare and show his mastery of post-impressionism. Many of his works were produced as prints throughout the 1920s by West Coast Engraving. In the early 1920s he achieved considerable press attention for a number of murals he painted on all the walls of a restaurant depicting traditional Chinese subjects. At some point circa 1930 he relocated to Los Angeles. Notable in his California period are the large scale oil on velvet paintings he produced. Fong's work was primarily figurative, and his subjects are primarily Chinese in traditional garb in narrative type paintings in Chinatown. Other subjects include nudes. Fong died in Los Angeles in 1974. I am continuing to research this artist and will update as necessary.
