A head gasket is a gasket the separates the cylinder head and the block. It separates the coolant passages, cylinders and oil passages. There are many other posts on this page that will provide more details. The head gasket provides a seal between the head and the engine block.
The cylinder head has to be removed and the head gasket replaced. This is not an easy job for the do it your selfer. There are several special tools required and when the engine is apart, there are several areas that have to be checked for exact tolerances and torque settings, otherwise the new head gasket will blow. I would suggest you have a mechanic do the work.

My 2001 Dakota is currently in the shop as I'm typing this for a Head Gasket to be replaced. The price tag my mechanic told me is a minimum of $2000.00. Long term, nothing short of a new gasket. Short term, in an emergency, something like JB Weld might do it, but would probably increase the cost of repair later.
not normal but head gaskets can go bad anytime. Sure it's the head gasket? White smoke out the tail pipe, coolant goes low( but not leaking on ground) & compression low in one or 2 cyl.
