They were actually invented in Northern Korea by a man called Sinaf Choi in 1128, 149 years before tap dancing. This meant that lots of Chinese people didn't know what they were so they originally used them as ancient whacking device as punishment, much to Sinaf's disgust. It was only when the mass disease in China broke out in 1625 that Sinaf's great, great grandson got people using the shoes like Sinaf wanted. That is the reason why tap dancing is called what it is because Sinaf's relative was called Tapash Choi, I think!

I have never heard that explanation before... I am not going to discredit you but I learned that shoes with the alluminum tap apearred after 1910 even though tap dance had been formed in the United States years before then.
