Frida Kahlo is an artist who was inspired less by the works of others as she was by her own internal life. Her subject matter was nearly exclusively self-portraiture, yet done in a manner that seems to straddle the line between surrealism and magic realism. Her technique is what academics call "naive." She really had little if any formal training. She was mocked by most when political muralist Diego Rivera famously gave her the first kind words said about her work
