Both have their own merits. However, i think you should read the Artemis Fowl series before H.I.V.E. I did that and really enjoyed it.

The Artemis fowl series was first conceived in book form, but is currently being converted into comic form (Graphic novel). There are currently 7 books in the Artemis Fowl series.The last one made is named The Atlantis Fowl.There may be an 8th book but Eoin Colfer says that its probably going to be the last book in the series.
