For a few months in Arles in 1888 he worked together with Paul Gauguin. But they each painted their own paintings.

That would be Vincent Van Gogh, according to legend. However, there is no evidence that he actually cut his own ear off. In fact, in recent times there is new historic evidence that suggests that it was cut off in an argument by a French artist called Paul Gauguin. See related link for the historian's new account.
He painted TWO chairs - one called Vincent's chair, the other Gauguin's chair. The for was simple (I think that is the one you have seen) the other finer . Vincent wanted to show his great respect for Paul Gauguin, when he had asked Gauguin to move to Arles and work together with Vincent.
He dreamed of collecting a group artists at Arles around Paul Gauguin and himself, but it did not happen. Nowadays he and Gauguin are labeled Post-Impressionists.

Van Gogh was inspired by fellow Post Impressionist Paul Gauguin.
Not much, unfortunately. Vincent persuaded Gauguin to come and settle with him in Arles, France. But it was soon evident that they were incompatible. So Gauguin moved out again after 3 months.
His colleagues he met in Paris, particularly Pissarro and Gauguin.

Van Gogh was unique, nobody painted in his style. Vincent worked for a time together with Paul Gauguin who he admired, but their styles were not the same.
