There are no examples of Roman portrait painting. The Romans did not do paintings of canvas. Roman portraiture was sculptural; that is, busts. Roman paintings were frescoes. These were mural paintings executed on freshly-laid, wet lime plaster. They had all sorts of busy scenes and were not used for portraits.
a symmetrically balanced composition. The Botticelli's Virgin and Child with four angels and six saints is a good example of Roman portrait painting.
Any good van Gogh painting that comes on to the market will cost extraordinary sums of money.
Van Goh's painting Sunflowers would be a good example of the impasto technique
good question which i want to find out also
Artists started painting self portraits because all the work they were doing was being sold to the people in the painting. The artist could use the self portrait to show potential clients how good he was at painting by holding it up to his face.
You will not find a good example of Roman portrait painting. Roman portraiture was sculptural (busts). Roman paintings were not on canvass like today's paintings. They were frescoes; that is, murals where water-based paint was applied on freshly-laid, wet lime plaster which, with the setting of the plaster, becomes an integral part of the wall. However, frescoes were not used for portraits.

I assume that you mean that the painting you have is a portrait of Shakespeare, or might be, rather than being a painting by Shakespeare, since Shakespeare was a writer, not a painter. A portrait of Shakespeare that looks like the other portraits of him is likely a more modern painting based on the authentic images we have of the Bard. For example, the Flower Portrait, one of the more famous portraits, is based on the Droushout engraving at the front of the First Folio. Periodically, someone comes up with a painting which they claim to be a portrait from life of Shakespeare. In order to make this claim, they have to prove that the painting is a genuine 16th century painting which could have been painted when Shakespeare was alive. The second thing that must be proven is that the painting has a traceable history. The most recent paintings for which this claim has been made are the Sanders and the Cobbe portraits. You will have noticed that it is not necessary that the painting need look anything like Shakespeare, and this is apparent when you look at the Sanders, and even more apparent when you look at the Cobbe. Basically, if you can find a genuine 16th century portrait of The Earl of Southampton's mother, it stands a good chance of being claimed as being of Shakespeare. It would have as good a provenance as the Cobbe Portrait. Tarnya Cooper, the National Gallery's expert in such things, has said that the only portrait which has a ghost of a claim to being an actual portrait of Shakespeare is the Chandos Portrait. If what you have is not likely to pass these tests, don't worry. It doesn't stop it from being a cool painting. The Mona Lisa is none the worse for not being a picture of Shakespeare.
