In 1965, while working on a drug for peptic ulcers, Searle pharmaceutical company stumbled upon "Aspartame" when one of the workers, James M. Schlatter, got some of it on his finger and licked it, while trying to pick up a piece of paper. He instinctively liked it, noting its intense sweetness, but bitter aftertaste.
