Andre Breton, Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Max Ernst, and Giorgio de Chirico were five main followers of the artistic style and cultural movement known as Surrealism. Surrealism became an official movement and philosophy in 1924 when French writer Andre Breton wrote the Surrealist Manifesto, a document which declares the purpose of Surrealism, its influences, and examples of Surrealist works. The Surrealists were interested in exploring paradoxes that exist between dreams and reality and visual representation and reality. They expressed their ideas through art (including painting, filmmaking, sculpting, and printmaking), writing, and verbal communication. Famous Artworks by Surrealist artists include The Persistence of Memory (1931) by Dali, The Son of Man (1964) by Magritte, Pieta or Revolution by Night (1923) by Max Ernst, and Love Song (1914) by Giorgio de Chirico. Some Surrealist artists, like Dali and Magritte, also worked with film; in 1946, Dali began collaboration with Walt Disney on a short animated film called Destinothat was completed posthumously and released by Disney in 2003.
