Jakarta started as port city 'Sunda Kelapa' which is under Banten Sultanate administration. The city then was controlled by Portuguese and liberated by Syarif Hidayatullah, a warlord from Cirebon Sultanate, and the city changed its name into 'Jayakarta' in 1527, means the city of victory. The Dutch then took over the city, expanded and revamped it as it as the colonial seat of government, renamed into 'Batavia'. After the Indonesian independence in 1945, the govt change back the name to Jakarta as the short of original Jayakarta name. The 1527 liberation from Portuguese is then considered as the founding of Jakarta.
