If not for Enoch, the people of Things Fall Apart would have continued to slowly decay. His crime brings the emotion of the repressed villagers to the forefront and sets in action the inevitable rebellion. This quiet rebellion is quickly put down by the white man's power, and the villagers do the rest to end it, thus providing a conclusion to the story.
