Cubism was invented around 1907 by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. It was a style of modern art. It also challenges traditional art e.g. Perspective. It revolutionised other artist's perceptions on every day objects. Cubism had two phases. The terms 'analytic' and 'synthetic' are used to separate post 1912 and pre 1912 cubism. Pre 1912 was analytic it was oriented on the observation of a subject. Post 1912 was synthetic it was based on artist techniques like collage. The first Cubist exhibition was in 1911 and took place at the salon des independents.

After working for the Picassos for many years as their butler, I have gained both an outsider's and insider's perspective in their family. Young Pablo did very well in school, but was always a little weird. He was a genius when it came to art though. His mother was very loving, but his father was very cold and closed off. The only tie he talked to me was to tell me what to do or to give me my payment. Mrs. Picasso and I often had many deep conversations. She was a lovely lady. Overall, there was a lot of conflict in the Picasso household, with a loving mother and a cold father. Pablo thrived, even with this setback.
