King Francis for the king of France
King Francis I
In 1516, at the age of 64, Leonardo went in France at the invitation of the French King François 1er (Francis I), who gave him his own childhood castle, le Clos-Lucé, and paid him an annual rent for his work as engineer, painter, and architect. The records indicate that Francis I had a great admiration for Leonardo. Leonardo died of illness three years after his arrival, in 1519. Francis I had a castle close to the one he had given to Leonardo, but historians say there is no trace of him being there when Leonardo died. They think it is probable that he was actually in Saint-Germain, near Paris, waiting to the Queen to gave birth, that day.
Francis was the name he chose following the election. It was to honor St. Francis of Assisi.
