The idea of a day to celebrate the Earth and to promote conservation was first promoted by peace activist John McConnell, but he proposed that we celebrate it on March 21. The date of Earth Day was officially moved to April 22 by US Senator Gaylord Nelson, who held an environmental teach-in on that day, and later received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work on behalf of the environment.
