Emile Renouf was a French Painter of the 1800's. He painted the Helping Hand. This is one of my favorite paintings of all time. I happened to walk in to a Smithsonian art gallery back in the mid-80s and was struck by the size and expressions of the older man and the young girl. I love the tenderness and self-assuredness in the man's eyes and the girl's uncertainty and care to row correctly. I don't know how I became aware of it, but, the artist's self-portrait is painted into the boat to the left of the girl's leg.

We went to the National Art Museum in DC today and we were told this painting is at the Renwick or Corcoran, but I am not finding Renouf listed at either museum by going to each respective website. Each of these museums is dedicated to American painters, so perhaps he moved to the United States? He is also credited with a painting of the Brooklyn Bridge.
