During the 17th century there was a fascination with subjects that blurred the boundaries between two things and acted as the 'other'. Depicting dwarves in the painting would have been in line with this common theme. Including that which would have been considered 'monstrous' in that day with that which was considered royal, is a way of saying 'look at what the royal princess is not, look at what is other to her, and compare'.
