There are many reasons why people are afraid, to list them all would be quite impossible. Mostly i believe people are afraid because they have something to lose, such as a life, companionship etc and due to harm or maladies befalling them. Fear can also result due to uncertainty, eg. uncertainty about your future if you do not do well in your exams etc. If you are mentally strong and able to detach yourself from the real world there is no need to fear anything.

Since "The Exorcist" is called by many people "the most frightening movie ever", I think that many people are afraid of satanic influences (I think mostly Chrisitans, who make about 30% of the world population). I know also some people, who are afraid to death from clowns, because as a child they met clowns and many children don't understand their look or their behaviour (that is why many people can't watch the film "IT" from the famous Stephen King book by the same name).
