1. It's only the lower reaches and mouth of rivers that are tidal. 2. Tidal rise and fall does not always translate into comparable change in flow speed, buut normally does die to the water volume involved. However, often a river will have higher flow speeds than an area of nearby ocean with the same rise and fall. 3. Rivers are constricted at the edges and the estuary often has a 'funnel' venturi effect (sides AND depth) compressing the flow, which accellerates it.

Where is tidal energy obtained from?

Tidal power operates by damming the mouth of a river or other water source that leads into the ocean. When the tides come in (tides are created by the gravitational pull of the moon) the dam lets water flow through. At the peak of high tide the dam is closed until the peak of low tide. Then the dam is opened and turbines are powered by the water flowing out into the ocean due to the water level difference. To learn more about how tidal power works check the related link.

Is the volume variance a controllable variance from a spending point of view?

No, the volume variance is controllable but not related to spending. The volume variance calculates the dollar impact of producing more or less than the budgeted production volume. Are the ocean tides more pronounced in regions close to the equator - since the moon is more-or-less overhead throughout the year?

Not really. The major influence on the magnitude of the tides is topography; the arrangement of the seafloor and coastlines. So there are higher tides in places like the Bay of Fundy (between Canada and Maine) or in the Bristol channel on the west coast of England.

Is there an ocean named after Alexander Mackenzie?

No, there isn't an ocean named after him- only a river. See 'related links' for more information.

Why do the Moon's gravity have a greater effect on earths ocean tides than the suns gravity?

Even though the suns gravitational pull is stronger than the moons and does infact effect the tides slightly, the moon is close enough to pull the tides more than the sun. Its all distance related.
