She was the goddess of the wilderness and wild animals, it was natural that as people began to hunt, these animals would be seen as under Artemis' domain and protection, so they would prey for a good hunt - as she was thought to hunt within the wilderness - and if the hunters were successful she was given part of the kill, and if not, it was probably told that the hunters had offended her.
