Athens turned the Delian League which it led against the Persian Empire into an empire of its own, and became overconfident of its power, After several actions, Athens tried to ruin Megara, a city-state member of the Spartan-led Peloponnesian League. Megara appealed to Sparta, Sparta demanded the Athens back off, overconfident Athens refused and war ensued.
