Bill Watterson did not set out to make Calvin & Hobbes a successful comic strip; he just drew comics because he was interested in them. In fact, he's stated many times that he regrets having made such a popular strip. In the ten years of making Calvin & Hobbes, Watterson eventually achieved every goal he had set out for himself at the beginning, and he was ready to move on to other interests of his, like painting and music.
Sure, it's a shame that Calvin & Hobbes is gone, but think of it like this; it's better that he stopped making Calvin & Hobbes when he had lost interest in it than if he continued drawing the strip without any interest in it.

Bill Watterson ended Calvin and Hobbes when he felt like he wanted to pursue other endeavors in his life. The final cartoon of Calvin and Hobbes is him heading out with his toboggan into a white snowy field and saying "Its a magical world, Hobbes, ole Buddy, lets go exploring" which summed up what was going through Bill's mind. This was one of the most popular comics in his series.AnswerWatterson has said that after ten years of keeping his artistic creations to small little panels, he wanted to explore larger expressions of his painting desires. He remains, as of May 2008, secluded from the public where he paints.
They did not! They are still making episodes of the show!

Lee was into writing from an early age, winning an aware through a newspaper repeatedly which he says wrote him and suggested to him that he write professionally. This lead to him eventually being hired by Timely comics as an editor, and that company eventually became Marvel comics. So he got into it early and did well. Lee told a story that he was disillusioned with the comics business and was about to quit the industry when his wife told him that just once before he quit he should write a comic the way HE wanted to write it. The result was the Fantastic Four.
I believe so.
