The Parliament passed the Tea Act in 1773, which gave the English East India Company the opportunity to avoid bankruptcy by granting monopoly to import tea, making the tea less expensive than even smuggled tea.
With the aim of punishing rebellious colonists for the Boston Tea Party, Parliament passed a series of laws known as the Coercive Acts in 1774.
From 1767-1770, England placed the Townshend Acts, a tax on all imports, upon the Colonies. Sometime during this time, they repealed the Acts, with the exception of tea. In 1773, England passed the Tea Act, which basically a royally granted monopoly to the East India Tea Co. on tea imported to the Colonies. The colonists rebelled on 16 December 1773 by dressing as American Indians and throwing the tea off the East India boats.
