Van Gogh was entered into the mental hospital because he suffered from multiple illnesses including Bipolar disorder and Lead poisoning (Giving light sources an omnious glow, shown better in The Starry Night). Some think he was administered to the hospital because he cut off his left earlobe, which is validated with the painting of a bandaged left ear. He might have done this for one of two reasons. It was a present to a prostitute who left him, or it was to his friend and nemesis, Gauglin.
