Clay pots are fired in extremely hot ovens called kilns. However, there are ways to do this at home: build a kiln, fire them in a pit fire, or smoke in a garbage can.
You can fire clay anytime after it has been crafted.
Yes
China clay, or kaolin, typically experiences greater shrinkage compared to fire clay during drying and firing processes. This is primarily due to its finer particle size and higher plasticity, leading to more significant volume changes as moisture evaporates. In contrast, fire clay, which is coarser and contains more alumina, has lower shrinkage rates, making it more stable under high temperatures. Thus, fire clay is often preferred for applications requiring minimal shrinkage.
fire
Fire the clay like glass, not clay. The problem with melting glass on clay is the coefficient is different. Glass will craze, (crackle) on the clay. If you want the glass to stay on the clay use high fire clay and fire it to bisque first. The second firing with the glass on it should be fired on a schedule that is suitable for the glass. You can not simply fire the glass up to it's melting temperature then allow it to cool without controlling the cooling rate. You may want the rate to be 60ºF/hour to cool depending on the type of glass you are using.
