In my professional opinion, first off mosaics are popular because of the amount of detail involved in creating them, its a very meticulous type of work. Even the word mosaic means patient work of the muses. The sky is the limit when it comes to design and detail. Materials used can range from natural materials such as stones and marble to glass and other small objects.
Mosaics today are mostly used for art and decorating
They can really be used anywhere, in gardens, on paths, in churchs there are often mosaics on the roof or on windows. As mosaics can be made out of nearly anything, they can be used in lots of area's. Mosaics don't have to make a picture so they can simply cover a surface. People have even used mosaics to cover cars etc!

The word 'Tessera' is often used to describe one of the small shapes used to make a mosaic picture or pattern. Tessarae (the word for more than one tessera) used in ancient mosaics can be of stones of different colours, or cubes of fired clay or glass. Modern mosaics also make use of modern materials such as plastics or steel, etc.. The modern cathedral in Barcelona, Spain, is covered in a mosaic made of broken pottery and china.
