Wheels going over the land have rolling friction. This friction slows down a vehicle. At low speeds, this is the main reason why a car engine is needed to push a car forward.

You may have heard of superconductivity. If a superconductor can be created that will work at room temperature, it will be possible to create a vehicle which will operate on tracks without rolling friction. Once set in motion, it will need very little energy to continue moving.

Brakes help a bicycle to stop, of course --- but do you know why? it's because brakes use friction. When you squeeze the brakes, rubber blocks press against the wheels. The friction between the blocks and the wheels slow your bicycle down.

What do drum brakes do?

Looks kinda like a big steal cereal bowl behind the tire. The brakes press outwards (from the inside) creating enough friction to stop or slow the vehicle. Disc brakes look kinda like a shiney ring. The brakes press inwards on either side of the ring, creating enough friction to........you get the idea.

You press the brakes and the car is at a full stop it shakes like you could feel the vibration what does this mean?

If you mean when you are coming to a stop, and press on the brakes, you feel a vibration- this most likely means that your brake rotors are warped and need to be turned. If you mean you are already at a full stop, in idle, and you press the brake and feel a vibration- it may mean a vacuum problem in the engine or something like that. So it depends- is it your brakes vibrating, you feel it in the pedal? Or is it your engine suddenly running rough and the whole front end of the car shakes?
