Use a compass. It's needle points to the south pole of a magnet.
The magnetic field can easily be noted if you hang a magnet from a piece of string, or use a compass; the compass needle is also magnetic. The idea is for the compass or hanging magnet to be able to freely rotate. Since the north pole of the compass needles points north, you can conclude that the south pole of planet Earth is towards the north. Remember that opposite poles attract each other.

In a regular magnetic compass, the needle is a magnet. One end is the south pole and the other end is the north pole. Magnets are affected by other magnets. If you are at the North pole, the north point of the magnetic needle in the compass will tilt a little downwards, and the south pole of the compass needle will tilt upwards. If you hold the compass in a direction vertically perpendicular to the surface of the Earth, the needle will align itself like the earth's magnetic field, as if it were a huge bar magnet, the north part of the needle facing upwards.
