There is no way of assessing the value of a work of art until it is up for sale. And no similar work by Botticelli has been sold recently. And the museum that holds "Primavera" (Uffizi, Florence) is not likely to give it up any time soon.
Botticelli's Venus was the first large-scale canvas created in Renaissance Florence. He prepared his own tempera pigments with very little fat and covered them with a layer of pure egg white in a process unusual for his time. His painting resembles a fresco in its freshness and brightness. It is preserved exceptionally well and the painting today remains firm and elastic with very little cracks. Before Botticelli's time paintings had religious subjects or were portraits. That is what people commissioned from artists. The interesting thing is NOT that there are FEW mythological paintings, but that there were some commissions for mythological subjects. And from then on those subjects grew more popular. It was not like today: an artist paints what he likes and tries to sell it. In renaissance times you went to an artist and asked him to paint what you want. Also, a radical monk named Savanarola burned 'earthly pleasures' including some of Botticelli's work. For more information on Savanarola's influence, I'd go to the link below.

"Botticello" means "little barrel" in Italian. Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi(now known as Sandro Botticelli) modified his brother's nickname "Botticello"(presumably called that because he was big) to create the name he is known by today. So...Botticelli doesn't mean anything. It is derived from "Botticello", which means "little barrel"
