The blood turns red once it has come into contact with oxygen. This is why your veins appear blue, purple, etc, but when you cut yourself the blood is red. Not sure about details, but oxygen changed the color.

Increased oxygen content of the returning pulmonary blood is responsible for the bright red coloration. The farther out the blood travels; from the lungs, the darker it will become. The oxygen molecules are attached to a hemoglobin molecule. The more oxygen enriched the hemoglobin is the sample of blood the brighter red that sample will be.

Because it is oxygen rich...the blood that returns to the heart has a blue-ish tinge contains little to no oxygen, and that's why it is blue...

Blood leaving the heart is bright red because it is filled with oxygen. Without oxygen your blood is blue, but you never see it.
