Leonardo De Vinci was the greatest painter of his time and his work is revered today. He kept three paintings with him to his death. The Mona Lisa was one of them. Too precious to part with. It had the enigmatic smile of several of his works. The hands are another trademark. Shown as an expression of a persons demeanor and character. The "smile" perhaps the refection of the persons soul. His power of expressing so much detail with shadows is in evidence here. The Mona Lisa and "Our Lady of the Rocks" share that and an obscura background. Layers of lacquer painted over the back ground to give it depth. This small picture can never have a price put on it. It belongs to a world that needs this beauty. It is for all to see, not for one person to possess.

The 'Mona Lisa' may be the most recognized painting in the world. She is priceless for a number of reasons. The main reason is she was painted by Leonardo da vinci, circa 1503-1505, one of the most famous artists from the Italian Renaissance. The 'Mona Lisa' is a portrait of the wife of a wealthy Florentine who most likely knew da Vinci. It is not the portrait itself that so many admire, rather it is her enigmatic smile and the way her eyes seem to follow the viewer around the room. At the time da Vinci painted her, he employed a new technique of the Renaissance, atmospheric perspective, which gave a realistic sense of depth to the painting.

The extremely high monetary value of the painting Mona Lisa is the result of two different factors. In the first place, it is a genuinely significant painting, revolutionary in its day (although it hardly looks revolutionary today, many centuries later) as the first painting to depict a portrait of a woman who was directly facing the painter, rather than being in profile (it was considered daring for women to look directly at someone, at that period of history) as well as having a remarkable background depicting the geological past of the region, rather than the existing scenery, by which it is believed that da Vinci was making a statement about the connection between women and the world of nature. In the second place, because of the great amount of attention that this painting has received both from art historians and from theives, it has become extremely famous, and is the best known painting in the world.
