The British Museum, apart from housing vast collections of important items, such as the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles, sarcofagi, coins and historical items from as far back as the iron age, is also the worlds first museum for all people, not beholden to the King or the church, and with free entrance for all visitors.

Originally, the Museum was based on the collections of Sir Hans Sloane. Not wanting his, immense, collection broken up after his death, he bequeathed it to the nation, in the form of King George II. And so, in 1753, after Sloane's death, the King gave his formal assent to the founding of the British Museum, including two other libraries and collections and creating an entirely new type of museum, one meant for everyone and which didn't belong to any single entity.
