The "Rosetta Stone" discovered by Napoleon's engineer Pierre François Xavier Bouchard in 1799 was taken from the French by the British who shipped it to Portsmouth England in 1802. It was moved to the British Museum in London later that year where it remains on public display.
Any member of the public can walk into the British Museum any day it is open and see the stone prominently displayed in a large see through case.
