Someone during his time gave him an artifact that represented David. (The David from The Bible.) so having this new artifact gave him inspiration on how and why he wanted to scuplt this specific object. If I remember correctly, it was presented to him by either Cellini or Donatello. He made this while he was around his early twenties.

Michelangelo got the commission to sculpt David for the Florence Cathedral. When this happened Donatello had been dead for 50 years and Cellini had just been born. Michelangelo didn't really like the Medici family. They are considered the Goliath to his David.
