Linkage or cable worn. If it will go into reverse when the engine isn't running, it is probably the slave cylinder getting weak and not disengaging the pressure plate completely. With the engine off, give the clutch pedal 2-3 quick pumps and try getting it in reverse. If it does, it's either the slave or master cylinder and the slave goes bad more often.
how bout this on the 79 there is a vacum line to the trannie connects to trannie if comes off car wont go into gear look under for lose hoses. hope this helps
I think it might have the same problem as my jeep ,,,it only go forward and when i shift the gear to reverse...it won't. Have ask around was told it have to be the transmission (Ugh! an expensive repair)
