Crunches were developed to keep the stomach lean. They work a shorter range of the muscle making it more ripped, not bulky.
Crunches will build (grow) the abdominal muscles over time. How much growth is dependent on diet, intensity and consistency. That alone is usually not enough to effect an overall body slimming. This is due to the fact that fat is burned when glycogen stores are depleted and the body resorts to tapping into fat reserves to continue its course. Oxygen is the enabler in this relationship. The more efficiently oxygen can be used in this process the quicker and more dynamic the growth will be.
Abdominal muscles are smaller, leaner muscles in general and therefore don't require a lot of oxygen and glycogen before they reach optimal fatigue point (think about how quickly they start to burn after a few well executed crunches).
Leg, chest or back muscles are large and require more effort to fatigue. That means glycogen is depleted and fat is called upon to continue the exercise. This balanced approach to exercise is how people are able to lower over-all body fat levels. Once a person has achieved this level of fitness the abdominal muscles are thus visible.
Ironically, popular sentiment touts rock hard, well defined abs as the reason to fitness when they are merely a result.
So, to answer the question: no, abdominal exercises alone will not make one lean. And no, they won't bulk up the tummy area to speak of. The reason is because if all you are doing is abdominal exercises your not going to have any real muscle growth there other than good toning.
I used to use a product called RTV to make small moulds for reproducing model ship parts in bulk. This is a 2 part, liquid silicone that sets in almost any shape you need around a'master' . After it sets, you then remove the master and can make many copies using fiberglass resin.

You must be talking about a CARBURETOR. They are called metering rods. They control how much fuel flows through the jets in the carburetor as you push the gas pedal. They can make a engine run lean or rich, by changing the air/fuel ratio.

I don't think they were built earthquake proof but their sheer bulk of gravity make them so. The Giza pyramids, for example, have withstood a number of earthquakes in their time without significant damage. Some of the later mud brick pyramids have collapsed but I am not sure this is due to earthquakes, erosion or just bad construction.
Work out more. Leg lifts, bent knee leg lifts on a raised surface, sit ups, crunches, the bridge etc...
Try bicycling. You might also try squatting light weights to increase the size of your glutes. Crunches and Roman-chair sittups will reduce tummy buldge also.
press ups crunches pull ups and tricep dips

Doing crunches won't make you bloated, it will help burn belly fat and gain abs. Eating junk food will make you bloated and fat.
Lean-tos' features
You need to hold your stomach in when doing crunches. If you push your stomach out the muscle will shape that way.
Lots and lots of hard crunches.

Doing crunches does not make you skinny. Eating less calories than you burn and being active (cardio exercise) will make you skinny.
Yes, doing crunches will help with the overall conditioning of your body core - which is part of the driving force needed by your legs,
