Also, after a couple of years the substance will produce algae, and will turn green. Overall, I conclude, as many others would, that sandstone is not a good substance for a patio surface.

That depends on what minerals make up the sandstone. A very common sandstone is quartz arenite, and therefore on the Mohs scale of hardness it would be a seven.
